History of the Biology Education Study Programme

The Biology Education Study Programme is one of the undergraduate programmes under the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Information Technology Education (FMNSITE), Universitas PGRI Semarang. The Study Programme has a long-standing history in providing higher education focused on preparing prospective biology educators who are professional, innovative, scientifically competent, environmentally aware, and able to adapt to developments in science and technology.

Historical Development

The Biology Education Study Programme at Universitas PGRI Semarang was officially established on 20 April 1993. Since its establishment, the Study Programme has carried out academic activities as part of the institution’s commitment to providing high-quality teacher education, particularly in the field of biology education. The programme was developed to address the growing need for qualified biology educators who possess strong pedagogical competence, scientific knowledge, research skills, and the ability to integrate biological sciences into educational practices.

During its early development, the Biology Education Study Programme was part of the institutional journey of IKIP PGRI Semarang, which focused on strengthening teacher education and producing professional educators. This period became an important foundation for the Study Programme in developing academic culture, improving learning quality, enhancing lecturer competencies, and strengthening research activities in biology and science education.

In response to the increasing demand for high-quality higher education, the Biology Education Study Programme has continuously improved its academic services through curriculum development, innovative teaching and learning approaches, research enhancement, community engagement programmes, and collaboration with educational institutions and professional partners. These continuous improvements have strengthened the Study Programme’s role in preparing graduates who are able to contribute to the advancement of biology education and scientific development.

In 2014, following the institutional transformation from IKIP PGRI Semarang into Universitas PGRI Semarang, the Biology Education Study Programme continued to grow within a broader university ecosystem. This transformation provided greater opportunities for the Study Programme to develop interdisciplinary collaboration, strengthen research and innovation, integrate technology into biology learning, and respond to the evolving challenges of education, science, and society.

Excellent Accreditation (Unggul)
The programme achieved Excellent Accreditation from LAMDIK based on Decree Number 267/SK/LAMDIK/Ak/S/III/2024. This accreditation is valid for five years, from 4 March 2024 until 3 March 2029.

The Biology Education Study Programme focuses on strengthening knowledge and expertise in the fields of Character and Personality Education, Supporting Knowledge, Pedagogical Knowledge, Biological Knowledge, Research and Publication, Science and Climate Change Literacy, Occupational Health and Safety, and Bioethics.

Through a curriculum designed to be completed within 4 years (8 semesters) with a total study load of 144 credits (216 ECTS), the programme is committed to producing graduates with strong competencies in biology teaching, scientific research, environmental education, laboratory management, educational innovation, and the application of biological sciences in various professional contexts.

The Study Programme’s achievement of Excellent Accreditation reflects its commitment to implementing continuous quality assurance and maintaining high academic standards.
